About the Department of Education

The Department of Education at Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit Kalady provides educational programs with the belief that foundational school education is essential for individual development. There is an urgent demand for teachers who can effectively meet the demands posed by today's knowledge-driven society. This program aims to raise skilled educators capable of delivering exceptional learning experiences for students to thrive in the contemporary world. To foster a student-centered classroom that incorporates diverse instructional and learning approaches, a transformation in the teacher education sector is necessary. Thus, the department emphasizes quality-driven teacher education, concentrating on enhancing future educators' understanding of educational principles.

Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) - B.A.B.Ed (Secondary Stage)

Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit Kalady provides a 4-Year Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP) designed in accordance with the National Education Policy 2020 and the Four-Year Undergraduate Program (FYUGP). This program is an integrated dual major undergraduate degree, where students will major in education as their first discipline and select a second major from a field of their choice. With a multidisciplinary approach, ITEP enables students to earn two degrees simultaneously (Education + Selected Discipline) within a four-year timeframe, thus allowing them to save at least one year of study. Focussing on holistic education, the program incorporates technology, practical training, inclusivity, and core values into its framework, equipping students and future educators with essential skills that meet international benchmark.

  • Eligibility for Admission: To be eligible for admission to the Integrated BA-BEd program, candidates must meet the following criteria:

    • Educational Qualification: Successfully complete the 10+2 or equivalent examination from a recognized board in India.
    • Entrance Examination: Appear for the National Common Entrance Test (NCET), conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), and meet the necessary eligibility requirements.

Infrastructure, Resources and Student Support Facilities

Administrative Block   The Administrative Block serves as the central hub for all administrative operations of the University. It houses the offices of key officials, including the Vice Chancellor, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Registrar, and Finance Officer. The block also accommodates various important sections such as Academic, Administration, Finance, Examination, Planning and Development, and the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), ensuring smooth and efficient functioning of the institution
Academic Block 3000 The Academic Block is equipped with six dedicated classrooms for the ITEP program, each covering an area of 73.5 square meters, providing ample space for effective teaching and learning. The block also includes well-maintained bathroom facilities for both boys and girls, staff rooms to accommodate faculty members, a separate office room for administrative functions, and a Head of Department (HOD) room to support academic leadership. Additionally, ramp facilities are available to ensure accessibility for individuals with physical disabilities, promoting an inclusive learning environment."
Library 1458.21 The University library named as Saraswatham Centre for Learning, functions in the Headquarters at Kalady in a three storied building with a total area of 55,500 sq. ft., has an 500 seating capacity and a total title of books numbering 1,05,798 out of which more than 5000 books are from education and 127 journals. The Library has been functioning as fully automated with KOHA (version - 17.11.13) since 2015. User friendly services are ensured to all the stakeholders and beneficiaries. Koha is a fully featured, scalable, library management system which includes catalogue, OPAC, Circulation Member Management, Serials and acquisition packages.

Multipurpose Hall 406.08 Fully air-conditioned multipurpose hall with a seating capacity of 400
Auditorium   SSUS has sufficient spaces for arranging cultural activities. In addition to the existing Silver Jubilee Memorial Auditorium that can accommodate 1000 participants. Another new auditorium,with 1000 seating capacity is in the last phase of completion. The Activity Centre is also using for conducting cultural events
Language Laboratory   SSUS has an advanced Language Laboratory functioning in the Language Block having 21 Computers
Psychology Laboratory   A Psychology Laboratory has been established in the SSUS with the objective of providing advanced facilities for testing and research.
Sports, Games, (indoor, outdoor), Gymnasium, Yoga Centre, etc.   SSUS ensures enough facilities for sports and games like Football, Cricket, Kho-Kho, Volleyball, Badminton and Kabaddi. The Activity Centre provides space for indoor sports such as badminton, indoor football, indoor cricket, gym and yoga. 32,000 sq.mtr. play ground is available for the use of students at Kalady. 375 sq.mtr area is marked for shuttle court and 180 sq.mtr,area is allotted for gymnasium.
Heritage Museum   The Kanakadhara Museum was established in Kalady campus as the Heritage Museum of SSUS. This museum functions for the preservation of historical and cultural resources and as the centre exhibiting the cultural history/ antiquities of the region.
Recording Studio   The Recording Studio is equipped with a state-of-the-art e-content development facility designed to support the creation of high-quality educational materials. The studio features advanced tools and technologies including 4K recording cameras, interactive panels, graphic tablets, and MacBooks configured with professional-grade video editing software. In addition, the studio is outfitted with specialized lighting systems to ensure optimal video quality during recording sessions.
GIS Lab   The Department of Geography has a well set functional air conditioned GIS laboratory with twelve computers, six GPS, soil tester, six stereoscopes, planimeter, magnetic compass, digital camera and software like Erdas Imaging 2013, ENVI and QGIS.
Counselling Centre   The university has a well-established Student Counselling Cell (SCC) under the Director of Students Services. A qualified Student Counsellor provides counselling services to students and staff. Various lecture sessions, talks, workshops and orientation gatherings are organised by the SCC to support students’ performances in the curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. In addition to this, SSUS provides a help desk to all stakeholders, through 24×7 phone number.

Eligibility

A Certificate obtained after successful completion of Grade 12 (or equivalent stage of education such as Pre-University, Intermediate, etc.) with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate or an equivalent grade from a recognised Board/University.

Program Outcomes
  • A comprehensive knowledge and coherent understanding of the chosen disciplinary/interdisciplinary major and minor as well as of courses of study relating to other curricular components of ITEP, and current and emerging developments associated with each of the subjects/courses of study.
  • Procedural knowledge and capacities required for performing and accomplishing professional tasks associated with the chosen disciplinary/interdisciplinary major/minor and subjects/courses relating to other curricular components of the ITEP.
  • Capacity to apply the acquired knowledge and experience to generate solutions to specific problems associated with the chosen disciplinary/interdisciplinary major/minor and subjects/courses relating to other curricular components of ITEP, including real-life application of knowledge in multiple situations, and to solve problems relating to teaching-learning-assessment processes by selecting and using appropriate methods, tools, and materials.

ITEP with Secondary Stage Specialisation includes Grades 9, 10, 11 and 12. The four-year Integrated Teacher Education Programme ITEP) envisions the creation of passionate, motivated, qualified, professionally trained, and well-equipped teachers capable of designing and implementing developmentally appropriate learning experiences for students at different stages of school education. The ITEP seeks to ensure that the prospective teachers are given the highest quality education in content, pedagogy, values, and practice.
