About the Department

The Department of Music started functioning in the year 1995, with UG programme. Now this is a full fledged Department with UG, PG and PhD Programmes under choice based credit & semester system. The Department has produced eminent musicians, musicologists and composers in its run. Top- ranking musicians in Kerala served the University in its initial days. The Department is a place where commitment to high standard is matched by a concern for developing the talents of each individual student. The major activities of the Department include teaching and research. The curriculum is designed to foster a comprehensive understanding of both the theoretical and practical aspects of Carnatic Music. The diverse programme offerings range from basic lesson to higher degree of learning such as criticism and performance. The teachers and students of the department have won many awards and accolades to their credit at the National and State levels. Some of the students have won prizes at the Inter University South Zone Youth festival and Inter University National Youth festival.

  • PSO1 Comprehend fundamental concepts of Carnatic Music and demonstrate various aspects of ragas and talas through writing, rendition of compositions and playing the musical instruments, Violin and Mridangam.
  • PSO2 Understand methods of interpreting music and musicology.
  • PSO3 Acquire the basic language skills of a minimum of three languages including the global language, get sensitized on major contemporary social issues through representative works in these languages, critically respond and effectively articulate the same in writing and speech.

About the Program

The programme envisages to foster students to get acquainted with the rudiments of Carnatic Music in a graded order, with a view to make them performers of high merit. The syllabi is designed in such a way that the needed samples of compositions, the basic ragas and talas, the improvisational items all have been included in a logical order. The students also get an opportunity to explore their research aptitude by doing a project in the final semester and also through the course, Concert, they are able to showcase their performance skills in the same semester.

About the Program

The MA programme in Music incorporates three streams, Practical music, historical musicology and conceptual studies- all related to Carnatic Music/ South Indian Music, with more focus on performance oriented training. The syllabi is designed with specific learning outcomes, with internal and external evaluation. The programme explores the more advanced areas of practical music such as Ragam Tanam Pallavi and Music Concert. The dissertation in the last semester helps the students to foster their interest in research.

About the Program

The programme with its choice based structure and multidisciplinary nature provides choice of the career path for the students by selecting any of the pathways prescribed such as Single Major, Major with a Minor, Major with double Minor etc. It is also possible for them to take Violin/ Mrudangam as minor, which adds to their practical knowledge in Music. Those who want to get involved in research can make use of the same in the eighth semester. The wide possibility of elective courses in the last semesters provide chances to explore selected areas in practical music and theory.
