About the Department
The Department of Psychology at Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, located in Kalady, Kerala, India, is a prominent academic unit dedicated to the study and research of psychological sciences. The Department was established in 1995 with an undergraduate course in the triple-main stream (Psychology, Sociology, and Sanskrit) under the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. In 1998, the triple-main courses were discontinued, and Psychology began to be offered only as an interdisciplinary subject for the B.A. Sanskrit core course. The Ph.D. program was introduced in the Department in 2003, which was later converted into an Integrated M.Phil.–Ph.D. program in 2005. This integrated program was subsequently bifurcated in 2012. The P.G. program was introduced in the academic year 2005–2006. In 2016, the M.A. Psychology program was converted into the M.Sc. Psychology program under the Faculty of Science, Technology, and Education. In 2023, the Department has started M.Sc. Psychology and Disaster Management through project mode PG programme. The Department is known for its emphasis on integrating traditional and contemporary psychological theories, with a strong focus on Indian psychological perspectives alongside global frameworks. The Department introduced Indian Psychology as a core paper as an ever first initiative in the curriculum of a university department. In general, the Department aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of psychological principles, research methodologies, and practical applications in various contexts, including clinical, organizational, and educational settings. Every year the Department organizes seminars, workshops and interdisciplinary lecture series. The Department provide extension activities like psychological testing, awareness campaigns and trainings to the needy. As a research department, 27 Ph.Ds and 69 M.Phil.s were produced till 2025 in different areas of psychology under the supervision of eminent faculties.
